Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
What Is Silver Diamine Fluoride?
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a gentle, non-invasive treatment used to stop cavities from growing. It contains silver (which kills bacteria) and fluoride (which strengthens the tooth).
SDF is especially helpful for young children, those with dental anxiety, or kids with special health needs.
Why Do We Use SDF?
SDF is a great option when:
· A child is too young or nervous for traditional fillings
· Cavities are small or in early stages
· We need to slow or stop decay until other treatments are possible
· There are multiple cavities to manage
Our goal is to keep your child comfortable while protecting their teeth.
How Does It Work?
SDF is brushed onto the cavity with a small brush. (2 applications 4-6 weeks apart to start)
· It quickly kills the bacteria causing the cavity.
· The fluoride strengthens the enamel.
· The decay is slowed down
What to Expect After Treatment
The decayed area of the tooth will turn dark black. This is a normal sign that the SDF is working. Healthy tooth structure does not stain.
Other things to know:
· The dark color is permanent on the decayed spot.
· No numbing or drilling is needed.
· Your child can eat and drink right away.
Is SDF Safe?
Yes. Silver Diamine Fluoride is widely used around the world and recommended by pediatric dental experts. It is safe, effective, and well-researched.
The most common side effects are minor:
· Temporary staining of lips or skin (goes away in a few days)
· A slight taste that fades quickly
Will My Child Still Need a Filling?
Sometimes. SDF stops the cavity, but it doesn’t restore the shape of the tooth. We may recommend:
· Monitoring the tooth over time
· We place 2 applications 4-6 weeks apart. We may advise more applications in the future to maintain the effect
· Placing a filling or crown later, once your child is older
SDF often helps delay or even avoid more invasive treatment.
Home Care After SDF
· Keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
· Avoid sticky snacks that may irritate the treated area
· Attend your child’s regular checkups so we can monitor progress
When to Call Us
· New sensitivity or pain in the treated tooth
· A cavity that looks like it’s growing
· Dark staining in a new area you’re unsure about
